Updated: Nov 21, 2024

How a federal, state legislative, and judicial candidate leveraged social media.
How Political Candidates Leveraged Social Media for Victory

With the recent election cycle behind us, I’ve analyzed the social media strategies of several successful candidates from different parts of Texas.  Below, I spotlight three candidates who effectively utilized their platforms to boost awareness, engage voters, and drive their campaigns to victory beyond standard Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) reminders.

Congressional: Monica De La Cruz, TX-15

Monica De La Cruz secured re-election in South Texas’s 15th Congressional District, thanks in part to her well-crafted social media strategy. Her campaign effectively utilized:

  1. Engaging Content: Election Day countdowns, volunteer call-to-actions, and dynamic photos and reels showcasing her team canvassing door-to-door kept her audience engaged and informed.

  2. Personal Connection: De La Cruz shared weekly Bible verses every Sunday, resonating with the district's predominantly Hispanic, faith-centered community. These posts regularly attracted 70+ likes, highlighting the cultural relevance of her content.

  3. Highlighting Key Issues: She consistently addressed critical concerns like the rising cost of living and border security, aligning her message with the priorities of her constituents.

  4. High-Profile Endorsements: Monica amplified her visibility by sharing clips of her response to President Biden's speech and her appearances at the RNC Convention, establishing her as a prominent voice in her party.

Overall, Monica De La Cruz's social media presence was a cornerstone of her campaign, successfully mobilizing voters and rallying support.

State Legislature: Caroline Harris Davila, TX HD-52

Caroline Harris Davila won re-election for Texas House District 52, which includes parts of Round Rock, Taylor, Hutto, and Granger. Her strategy focused on community engagement and visibility:

  1. Active Community Involvement: Caroline’s posts showcased her participation in local events like ribbon-cutting ceremonies, parades, and Republican gatherings, reinforcing her connection to the district.

  2. Volunteer Recognition: Regularly thanking volunteers and sharing photos of door-to-door canvassing efforts helped foster a sense of community and appreciation within her support base.

  3. Legislative Highlights: By spotlighting her work on the Texas House Transportation Committee, Caroline demonstrated her ongoing commitment to serving her constituents.

  4. Energizing Rallies: Her rally with Governor Abbott was a social media highlight that boosted enthusiasm and visibility for her campaign.

Caroline Harris Davila’s consistent engagement with her constituents through social media helped solidify her re-election campaign.

Local (Judicial): Gino Rossini, Justice, Place 11

Gino Rossini's campaign for Justice Place 11 of the Fifth Court of Appeals showcased a masterful use of social media, focusing on voter education and outreach:

  1. Informative Videos: Gino posted short, impactful videos explaining the counties served by the Fifth Court of Appeals and outlined his qualifications. Standing in front of the civil courts building added a visual element that reinforced his message.

  2. Clear Messaging: He emphasized his endorsements, including a notable recommendation from the Dallas Morning News, adding credibility to his campaign.

  3. Targeting Young Voters: By featuring a first-time voter, Gino tapped into the 18-year-old demographic, promoting voter registration and engagement among younger audiences.

  4. Addressing Misleading Image: When a misleading image of him surfaced, Gino addressed it head-on, clarifying his attendance at a local Republican event and reassuring voters of his commitment to fairness and respect. His response was poised and professional.

  5. Community Engagement: Gino made appearances at various Republican events, including those organized by the Collin County GOP and Young Republicans. This targeted outreach helped him connect with younger, politically active voters.

Gino Rossini's strategic use of videos, personal engagement, and transparent messaging played a crucial role in his successful campaign.

Conclusion

Each of these candidates consistently updated their social media, leveraging photos, videos, and community-focused content to reach and resonate with their target voter demographics. Their proactive and authentic approaches were key to mobilizing supporters and securing their election victories.

By aligning their social media strategies with the values and priorities of their constituents, these candidates set a powerful example of how digital engagement can be a decisive factor in modern political campaigns.

I believe there is still work to be done with Republican candidates leveraging social media to increase awareness of their campaigns.  I encourage you to review their social media, take notes, and keep social media in mind to leverage your campaign!
