How to Help Political Candidates at Your Next Event
Political candidates need your help getting voters involved with their campaigns. If you are an officer of a GOP organization, you can help candidates by inviting them to speak at your upcoming meetings.
Before the Meetings
In case you are not sure which candidates to contact, you should narrow it down and invite local candidates to your meetings because it will help them gain exposure. Especially since municipal and county races are smaller and receive less media attention compared to statewide and federal races.
Prepare a “run of show” timeline for your event. The three main items to include are:
1. Meeting Start Time
2. Guest Speaker Time
3. Meeting End Time
Decide the order of which candidates will speak. Who will speak first? Who will speak next? If you all use microphones, do a mic check.
I suggest the speech duration to be a minimum 1-2 minutes. Candidate speeches must be at the beginning of your meeting so they can head out to another event on their busy schedule.
During the Meetings
Allow candidates to introduce themselves to the attendees, which office they are running for, why they are running for office and how to join their campaign. They may bring literature and yard signs to your meeting for attendees to take home.
Not all political candidates will be able to attend your meeting. If that is the case, a candidate may send a campaign staff member to attend your meeting. Please allow a campaign staff member to speak on behalf of the candidate(s) at your meeting.
After the candidates (or campaign staffers)’ speeches, thank them for speaking and encourage attendees to get involved with their campaigns: donating, volunteering, or taking a yard sign(s) home. Local candidates will appreciate you thinking of their campaign and arranging for them to speak at your meetings.
A Better Dallas allowed City Council candidates to speak at their monthly social. Below are pictures of Kendra Madison for Dallas City Council District 9 and Chris Carter for Dallas City Council District 10.
Final Considerations
If your organization meets monthly, incorporate candidate speeches to all your meetings. 2024 is quickly approaching. Some candidates have already filed to run for office. Check and see who is running in your area and invite them to your meetings!
