10 Political Organization Website Mistakes to Avoid

Updated: Nov 21, 2024

If you are designing a website or re-designing a website for your club, county party, political action committee, or any related organization, this blog is for you. The key to a good website is that it is appealing for prospective members to join your organization. Below are a few examples of mistakes I have seen from county party and club websites.

Website mistakes to avoid
10 Political Organization Website Mistakes to Avoid

1. Too many Drop-Down Menu Options

A website with too many drop-down menu options is overwhelming and difficult to navigate pages. If possible, try to minimize it. Make sure drop-down menu options are in the appropriate section of your website as well.

2. Distracting Videos

You can add videos from your organization or select videos from a website software to jazz up your page. If you select videos from a website software, keep them relevant because you do not want those videos to distract viewers from important information from your website.

3. Spelling Errors

Please proofread the text before publishing updates on your website. If there are already any spelling errors, correct them as soon as possible.

4. Buttons blocking text

Make sure the buttons are not blocking any text on your website. I recommend previewing your page before publishing and make sure all the text is legible (and the buttons work!).

5. Neglecting to edit your website via mobile view

If you edit your website on Wix, the default website editing page is desktop view. Do not forget to edit your website via mobile view. On the mobile website, text, pictures, and buttons, will most likely have a different format. Sometimes the sections appear in a different order, or the text may appear in a different color.

6. Lacking a clear purpose of a page

A page must have a clear purpose. An example of an unclear page is scattered, it has a hodge-podge of mixed content copied from another page that does not flow and is not distinguishable from other pages on your website.

7. “Getting Involved” Page is Unappealing

If you want people to get involved in your organization, you must explain how to get involved. Make sure the volunteer descriptions are clear and explain why volunteering is valuable. For visual appeal, include a photo gallery of past pictures of your organization campaigning for a candidate, phone banking, or setting up events. Therefore, prospective volunteers can view the photo gallery and get an idea of what it’s like to volunteer for your organization.

8. Not Linking Social Media Icons

It is important to link your social media accounts to your website so viewers can access them. Some websites have the icons but the links are missing and if the icons are clicked, nothing happens. Double check and make sure you link the social media accounts.

9. Outdated information

Please update any information about your club or organization. If you have new leadership, please update their names, officer title, and headshot. Remove previous 2022 election dates, past event RSVP sign-up links, and any other content that is no longer relevant. In addition, if you have a list of Elected Officials, for example, U.S. Members of Congress from Texas, please make sure new members who were sworn into office in January are included. Remove elected officials who left office as well.

10. Missing the Donate button

Political organizations cannot be active without donations. Double check your donation button links to your fundraising platform. Make sure your donation form is fully visible by scrolling down to the Donate button at the bottom.

Your organization’s website must be user-friendly, resourceful, and up to date. Do not overload your website with too many pictures, videos, links, or graphics otherwise it will appear too busy. Double check for any grammatical errors, broken links, and outdated information. Optimize your website regularly to keep consistent engagement. Make sure your website is appealing to prospective new members.
